One of the Best Youth Steel Bands
North of the Caribbean!
The York Lions Club, in April 1972, organized and sponsored a new band for youth called the York Lions Steel Band. Five volunteer members of the Club are responsible for its management. The Band raises it's own funds (is self-supporting) and no costs are charged to join, travel or learn musical skills, thus making it accessible to all youth. The Band is proud to be from the City of Toronto.
The York Lions Steel Band is made up of 25-30 teenagers, between the ages 12 to 19, who perform on various sizes of 45 gallon oil drums and is considered to be one of the best youth steel bands North of the Caribbean.
The Band's goals are to provide members with a year-round activity which, in addition to being lots of fun, teaches responsibility, commitment and teamwork. The members will be taught musical, leadership and performing skills. Educational trips, combined with musical performances, will be a priority.
